Wushu Star Sydney Chin's Emotional Farewell: Gold and Bronze in Bangkok
BANGKOK: It's a bittersweet moment for Sydney Chin, the 26-year-old wushu athlete, as she bids farewell to the national team with two medals in the SEA Games.
Yesterday, at the Cheng Wattana Government Complex, Sydney claimed a well-deserved bronze in the women's taijiquan and taijijian combined events, scoring an impressive 9.760 points in the taijijian routine. This achievement, combined with her earlier gold in the women's duilian barehands event with Loh Ying Ting and Mandy Cebelle Chen, marked a successful conclusion to her fourth SEA Games.
The competition was fierce, with Agatha Wong of the Philippines taking gold with a score of 19.556, and Lachkar Basma of Brunei securing the silver medal with 19.546 points. Sydney's bronze, with a total score of 19.523, was a testament to her dedication and skill.
Emotional Farewell
As Sydney concluded her last performance for the Malaysian wushu team, tears threatened to spill. She expressed her gratitude, stating, 'I'm incredibly happy, as this was my last SEA Games and my final performance for the national team. You won't see me perform with the national team again.'
Despite the bittersweet nature of the moment, Sydney's satisfaction was evident. She emphasized, 'I gave it my all, and even though it's a bronze, it feels like gold to me.'
A Legacy of Success
Sydney's achievements are remarkable. Within her first year with the national team, she became the world junior champion. She consistently performed on the podium at World Championships and recently achieved a podium finish at the World Games in China. Her success is a testament to her dedication and talent.
Malaysia's Second Bronze
Clement Ting, another Malaysian athlete, added to the team's medal count with a bronze in the men's changquan, daoshu, and gunshu combined events, scoring 9.766 points for a total of 29.238. The Malaysian wushu team has the potential to further enhance their gold medal tally, with Tan Cheong Min leading the way in the nandao event on the final day of the competition.
The reigning world champion, Tan Cheong Min, is currently at the top of the leaderboard after two events, showcasing Malaysia's strength in wushu.
