Spennymoor parents embark on daily walk for son's arthritis awareness, sharing their journey and the challenges of diagnosis.
A heartwarming story of determination and resilience, the Ranyard family's journey has captured the attention of the community. Dean and Becki Ranyard, from Spennymoor, County Durham, embarked on a month-long challenge, walking and running two miles daily to raise funds for Juvenile Arthritis Research. Their four-year-old son was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, an autoimmune condition causing joint inflammation, pain, and reduced mobility.
The diagnosis was not straightforward. Dean explains, "It was a bit of a puzzle for the doctors because there was no visible swelling, which is typically a key indicator of arthritis." Their son's symptoms, including difficulty bearing weight on his knees, crying, and sleep disturbances, had been present since nine months old. Becki, who also suffers from the same condition, recognized the signs from her own childhood experience.
The process of getting a diagnosis was lengthy, involving multiple tests to rule out other conditions. Dean notes, "No physical signs were evident on his MRI scan or ultrasound." Despite regular check-ups, the diagnosis came as a surprise, as the family had thought things were improving.
Becki shares her experience, "I've been fortunate with my condition, receiving good care and managing my symptoms. But it's not without pain and discomfort. I didn't want this for my son." She emphasizes the importance of early intervention, stating, "You don't want your child to experience pain."
The couple's dedication to charity is remarkable. Last year, they raised over £2,200 by walking 10,000 steps daily. Their current efforts have raised over £1,500, which will contribute to raising awareness, funding research for a cure, and supporting families affected by arthritis.
The Ranyards' story highlights the importance of awareness and early diagnosis. Their determination to share their experience serves as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. If you have a story suggestion for BBC Tees, get in touch and share your thoughts.
