In a shocking upset, the two-time defending Southland Conference champions, Southeastern Louisiana University's volleyball team, fell to Stephen F. Austin in a nail-biting 5-set thriller on Senior Day. But it wasn't just any loss—it was a statement game that left the crowd in awe and the team's record in question.
The match, held in Hammond, Louisiana, started with a heartfelt ceremony honoring the senior class: Lily Morgan, Peyton Stokley, Alexis Logarbo, India Bennett, and Lexi Gonzalez. These talented athletes have been instrumental in the team's success, bringing home two SLC regular-season titles, two SLC Tournament championships, and making two NCAA Tournament appearances. Their legacy is one to be celebrated.
However, the game had a different story to tell. Despite a strong start, the Lady Lions couldn't maintain their momentum, losing the first two sets. But here's where it gets interesting—they bounced back with a vengeance, taking the next two sets to force a deciding fifth set. And this is where the controversy begins...
Ainsley Driska shone with a career-high 18 kills, leading a quartet of double-digit killers. Alexis Logarbo and India Bennett contributed 15 and 13 kills, respectively, while Kyra McKelvey matched Bennett's tally. Peyton Stokley's 29 assists tied her career-high for the second consecutive match, and Ashley Richardson wasn't far behind with 27 assists. But was it enough?
The defensive efforts were led by India Bennett and Alexis Logarbo, who each contributed four blocks, with Bennett reaching a remarkable milestone of 300 career blocks. Abby Bailey's 14 digs paced the team, supported by Lexi Gonzalez and Gracie Brown, who also reached double digits in digs.
Stephen F. Austin's Camryn Hill and Ilana De Assis dominated with double-double performances, while Jayden Flynn and Zoe Gun provided crucial assists. Did SFA's strategy outsmart the defending champions?
With this loss, Southeastern's record drops to 18-8 overall and 10-4 in SLC play, while SFA improves to 18-7 and 13-1 in league action. The Lady Lions will look to rebound in their final two regular-season road matches, starting with a clash against Nicholls in Thibodaux on Tuesday.
