A mother of ten from NSW faced a harrowing battle against a rare and catastrophic reaction to a routine antibiotic. Elizabeth Mohr's story is a stark reminder of the potential dangers lurking within common medical treatments. Her journey began with a dental infection, but what unfolded was far from ordinary.
On December 1, Elizabeth started experiencing severe pain and a spreading rash. Despite multiple visits to the Narrandera Hospital, her condition worsened each time, yet she was repeatedly sent home with antihistamines and steroids. The doctors seemed perplexed, describing her as a 'mystery patient'.
As the rash intensified, Elizabeth's health took a turn for the worse over the next three days. Her daughter, Samantha, described a chilling scene: Elizabeth shivering and shaking without a fever. The situation demanded urgent action.
The family's GoFundMe page revealed the gravity of the situation. Elizabeth was transferred to Wagga Base Hospital and then airlifted to Sydney, where specialists uncovered the true nature of her reaction. Her body was overheating internally due to the rash, which was burning her from the inside out.
This rare reaction, known as DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms) or TEN (Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis), can be life-threatening. Professor Deshan Sebaratnam, a dermatologist, explained that antibiotics can trigger severe immune responses, causing inflammation in various organ systems. In extreme cases, the skin can die and blister off.
The challenge lies in distinguishing mild reactions from severe ones early on. Sebaratnam highlights the inadequate teaching of dermatology in medical schools and the lack of dermatology jobs in hospitals, especially in rural areas. This shortage of experts makes it difficult for patients to receive proper diagnoses and treatment.
The prevalence of severe drug reactions varies by ethnicity, with East Asian heritage individuals at higher risk. Sebaratnam emphasizes that anyone can be affected, and he urges caution. If a rash develops after starting a new medication, especially if symptoms worsen, seeking medical advice is crucial.
Recognizing the red flags is essential. Most rashes are itchy and red, but be wary of painful rashes, facial swelling, blisters or pus formation, involvement of the eyes, mouth, or genitals, and rashes that resemble bruises (which don't lighten when pressed). Feeling unwell alongside these symptoms is a cause for immediate concern.
