In the heart of downtown Somerset, Kentucky, a former furniture store has been transformed into a vibrant creative hub, thanks to the vision of Todd Clayton, a carpenter and musician. The Makers Mill, located at 402 E Mt Vernon St, has become a welcoming space for artisans, makers, and curators, offering a unique blend of creativity and community.
Clayton's journey began with a desire to establish a wood shop and a small storefront. However, upon discovering the Lay-Simpson Furniture Company location, he recognized its potential to become something more. His goal was to create a space that inspires and encourages people to engage in hands-on creation, and the Makers Mill has since become a testament to that vision.
The Makers Mill initially focused on showcasing a diverse range of vendors, including Jennifer Bryant's Stringtown Soap Company, Sarah Theresa Burns' murals and portraits, Dr. Bill Caudill and Jay Alexander's wood pieces, Keenan Lange's vintage clothing, and Sam Jones' Clothed By The Awe. One of the standout vendors is Elizabeth Cole, whose Sarino's Sweet Shoppe offers a delightful array of small-batch candies, authentic Italian gelato, and unique treats like dirty sodas.
The Mill's appeal extends beyond its vendors. It features a bar, Finders Keepers, run by Anastasia Vassiliev, offering a variety of cocktails, mocktails, and drinks. Blazn’ Butts BBQ, a restaurant from Jesse Merrick, also calls the Mill home. Additionally, a mini arcade and a pool hall provide entertainment for gamers.

Its diverse offerings have filled a void left by the closure of Jarfly Brewing Company in March 2024. Clayton's vision of creating a place he'd want to hang out at has been realized, and the Mill now embodies the spirit of artistic expression and community engagement.

She describes the Makers Mill as a dynamic, multi-purpose hub that supports a wide range of artistic expression, making it a source of pride for the community. Finley believes the Mill has redefined what's possible in Somerset, becoming a top attraction for visitors.
