The Diamondbacks' Bold Move: Unlocking Jordan Lawlar's Potential
In a controversial yet strategic move, the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Blaze Alexander, opening up a versatile role that could be a game-changer for the team. But here's where it gets interesting...
Alexander, with his impressive second half, was a tough loss, but the trade highlighted Arizona's commitment to strengthening their bullpen without breaking the bank. Enter Kade Strowd, the new reliever acquired, joining Taylor Clarke as the only additions to the 40-man roster this offseason.
General Manager Mike Hazen emphasized the limited options for trades, calling it a vote of confidence for other talented individuals like Jordan Lawlar. "Blaze had his place, but I believe Lawlar and others can step up too," Hazen stated confidently.
And this is where Lawlar's story takes an intriguing turn. With left field up for grabs due to Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s ACL injury, Lawlar, along with Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa, are the top contenders to fill the void.
"I'm excited for the challenge," Lawlar shared, referring to his recent outfield experience. With only three professional games in the outfield, Lawlar's versatility and athleticism could be a game-changer.
But here's the catch: Lawlar's struggles last year on the infield might have been due to early career nerves. The Diamondbacks, who traded for defensive powerhouse Nolan Arenado, need a strong infield presence. So, could the outfield be Lawlar's new home, or is it just a temporary move?
The San Diego Padres have successfully transitioned athletic infielders to the outfield, so could the Diamondbacks follow suit?
And this is the part most people miss: the Diamondbacks might not be done yet. With the void left by Alexander, the team could still acquire another bat, preferably an outfielder, but the primary need is a backup infielder who can play shortstop. Internal candidates like Ildemaro Vargas and free agents like Ramon Urias and Luis Rengifo are in the mix.
Hazen acknowledged the need to rebuild the position player group, stating, "We're exploring all options, from trades to free agency. We want to ensure we have depth at every position."
The Diamondbacks' starting lineup for this season is a puzzle with many pieces still missing. Catcher Gabriel Moreno, first baseman Pavin Smith/Carlos Santana, and right fielder Corbin Carroll are set, but the rest is up for grabs.
So, will Jordan Lawlar seize the opportunity and become the Diamondbacks' left fielder? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: the competition is fierce, and the team is ready to embrace it.
