Ikea's Ambitious Smart Home Expansion: 21 New Matter Devices Unveiled

Ikea has announced a significant expansion of its smart home offerings with the introduction of 21 new Matter-over-Thread devices, spanning three categories: lighting, sensors, and control. This move marks a substantial step forward in the company's mission to make smart home technology more accessible and user-friendly.

The new smart light range, for instance, includes the Kajplats smart bulb lineup, featuring eleven bulbs designed to cater to various lighting needs. These bulbs offer a wide range of shapes, brightness levels, and finishes, allowing users to choose between full-color control or tunable white light. Ikea claims that each model provides a broader intensity range and smoother dimming compared to the previous Tradfri lineup.

The lighting options include standard E27 bulbs, available in multiple lumen levels up to 1,521 lm, suitable for general lighting. Smaller E14 versions, along with E12 and E17 counterparts, are tailored for lamps and smaller fixtures. For accent lighting, GU10 spotlights offer both dimmable white and full-color models. Additionally, Ikea introduces clear-glass bulbs designed for pendant fittings, available in standard and oversized globe formats, adding a decorative touch to any space.

On the sensing side, Ikea introduces five new devices, each with a unique purpose. Myggspray, a motion sensor, is built for both indoor and outdoor use, automatically triggering lights in staircases, garages, or entrances. Myggbett, a door and window sensor, monitors entry and exit. Timerflotte keeps track of temperature and humidity. Alpstuga offers comprehensive air quality monitoring, including CO₂ and fine particle measurements, along with a time display. Klippbok, a leak sensor, completes the sensing lineup.

Ikea also expands its control options with the Bilresa remote controls, available in two styles: a simple two-button version for quick on/off and brightness adjustments, and a scroll-wheel version for smoother dimming or color switching. The company also offers colorful three-packs of either style, allowing users to place control points strategically around the house.

Lastly, the Grillplats smart plug transforms standard lamps or small appliances into connected devices, tracking power consumption and pairing with new remotes or sensors for quick automations. While indicative UK pricing is available, the global rollout of this new range is expected to be sequential, with prices likely to be very competitive, as indicated by the UK pricing.

The new Matter devices are designed to be compatible with various smart home platforms, including Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub Max, Amazon Echo, SmartThings hubs, and even some Eero routers. This interoperability ensures that users can easily integrate Ikea's smart home solutions into their existing ecosystems.

Ikea's commitment to making smart home technology more accessible and affordable is evident in this comprehensive expansion. With a focus on user-friendly design and a wide range of affordable devices, Ikea is poised to revolutionize the smart home market, offering a seamless and intuitive experience to its customers.
