A heartwarming story of a care home that goes above and beyond to make its residents' dreams come true has captured the attention of many. The power of a simple wish can truly transform lives, and this care home is a shining example of that.
Humberston House, located near Grimsby, has received an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for its exceptional care and dedication to its residents. The home, which caters to up to 72 adults with various needs, including dementia and physical disabilities, has implemented a unique approach to care.
But here's where it gets controversial... While some may argue that care homes should solely focus on providing basic needs, Humberston House believes in a more personalized and enriching experience. Manager Claire Stainton explains their 'person-led care' philosophy, where they strive to fulfill residents' wishes, no matter how big or small.
One such wish was granted to a resident who had always wanted to see Robbie Williams perform. The home organized a tribute act, and the resident, now 94, continues to talk about this special experience daily. This simple act of kindness has had a profound impact on her life.
"We have a wish tree in place, where we encourage residents to share their desires. We then do our best to make these wishes a reality," Ms. Stainton said. "It's about creating meaningful moments and bringing joy to their lives."
The CQC inspectors were impressed by the home's commitment to personalized care. They highlighted the strong connections between staff and residents, and how the staff go the extra mile to organize activities and pamper their residents.
"Kindness and support are at the heart of this service. The staff's dedication to making wishes come true is exceptional. It's these little touches that make all the difference," said Alison Chilton, CQC deputy director of operations.
And this is the part most people miss... The home also provides a range of nutritious meals and even offers a little tipple of alcohol with meals, if desired. It's all about treating residents as individuals and empowering them to live fulfilling lives.
"The home's commitment to individuality and goal achievement is a model for other services. It's a reminder that care can be both compassionate and empowering," Ms. Chilton added.
At the time of the inspection, 44 residents called Humberston House their home. Their stories and experiences showcase the impact of a caring and dedicated staff.
So, what do you think? Is this an inspiring example of care or do you believe care homes should stick to the basics? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below!
