It was a moment frozen in time, a realization that changed everything. Under the eerie shadows of a bridge, a romance blossomed, and two performers found their destiny. But let's start from the beginning...
The circus festival in Bathurst, 2010, was the stage for our first encounter. Jake's troupe, with their awe-inspiring talent, left an impression on me, a high schooler with circus dreams. Little did I know, this brief meeting would later become a pivotal point in my life.
Fast forward, and I found myself in Melbourne, a trained acrobat, while Jake's troupe evolved into the renowned company, Gravity & Other Myths. When the opportunity arose, I seized it, applying for a flyer position despite Jake's initial hesitation. And so began my journey with the company, a month-long contract that took me to Austria.
December 2018 was a whirlwind. I embarked on a picturesque train ride through Austrian mountains, my heart racing with excitement and nerves. The rehearsals were intense, pushing my body to its limits, but it was the connection with Jake that truly captivated me. Our shared love for condiments sparked a friendship, and the intimacy of tour life brought us closer. Yet, with a boyfriend back home, our bond remained platonic.
But fate had other plans. After my contract extension, my long-distance relationship ended, and Jake's feelings emerged. And this is the part most people miss—the subtle shift from friends to something more. In California, under the warm sun, our relationship transformed. The line between tour mates and lovers blurred as we shared tacos and laughter.
As we toured Europe, our secret romance flourished in the shadows. Paris, in its winter chill, became our private sanctuary. Here's where it gets controversial—a clandestine affair within a tight-knit company. We'd sneak away to our bridge, our little haven, where we'd stay up talking, laughing, and kissing, oblivious to the cold and fatigue. It was as if the world stood still when we were together.
2020 brought a global shutdown, but for us, it meant a return to Australia and an unexpected twist. We moved in together, and our relationship, once a tour romance, evolved naturally. Now, years later, we still tour, sharing meals and memories, but our love is no longer hidden.
Alyssa Moore and Jacob Randell, the performers who found love under the bridge, will grace the stage at Arts Centre Melbourne from January 13 to 25. Their story is a testament to the unexpected twists of fate and the power of connection. What do you think about workplace romances? Are they a recipe for disaster or a beautiful adventure?
