Ethiopia's Digital Revolution: Transforming Agricultural Trade with e-Phyto
Ethiopia is revolutionizing its agricultural trade with the launch of the electronic Phytosanitary System (e-Phyto), a groundbreaking initiative that promises to streamline the export process and boost the country's horticulture sector. The Ethiopian Agricultural Authority (EAA) has unveiled this innovative online platform, marking a significant leap towards modernization and efficiency in plant health certification.
The e-Phyto system, introduced during the second regional phytosanitary conference in Addis Ababa, aims to revolutionize the way phytosanitary certificates are issued. These certificates are crucial for verifying the health compliance of exported plant products, ensuring they meet international standards. By automating the process, Ethiopia is set to transform agricultural trade, making it more fluid, transparent, and compliant with global regulations.
The old manual system, plagued by delays, increased costs, and the risk of falsification and corruption, is now a thing of the past. According to Deriba Kuma, Director General of the EAA, the digital transformation will be a game-changer. Certificate processing time will be reduced from days to just a few hours, and the system will eliminate expenses associated with lost certificates, fraud, and physical travel.
The horticulture sector, a cornerstone of Ethiopia's agricultural exports, stands to gain immensely from this innovation. Cut flowers, a major export, generated nearly $470 million in revenue in the 2023/2024 fiscal year, while fruits and vegetables contributed $65.1 million. Together, these exports accounted for 14.1% of the country's total goods and services export revenue during that period.
By digitizing the phytosanitary certification process, Ethiopia is not only streamlining its agricultural trade but also enhancing its global reputation for quality and compliance. This move is a testament to the country's commitment to innovation and its determination to position itself as a reliable partner in the international market. As Ethiopia embraces this digital revolution, the horticulture sector is poised for growth, and the country's agricultural exports are set to thrive in the global marketplace.
