On Friday, he officially announced his retirement from broadcasting, capping off a career that included calling over 4,000 Blue Jays games across more than four decades. And this is the part most people miss—he’s leaving on the highest of notes, having teamed up with Dan Shulman to narrate every Blue Jays playoff game on Sportsnet in 2025, right up to their gut-wrenching Game 7 loss in the World Series.
“What a glorious season it was,” Martinez reflected. “Being part of every game, especially Game 7 of the World Series, was a joy and an honor. Only one other outcome could have made this year even more special.”
At 77, the Redding, California native admitted he had hoped to be part of the Jays’ 50th anniversary season this year. However, after heartfelt conversations with his wife Arlene, he decided it was time to “pass the torch.” Martinez’s decision comes after a personal battle with cancer in 2022, which led him to take a leave of absence from April 17 to July 26 while undergoing treatment.
“My journey with Sportsnet, the Blue Jays, and the incredible fans worldwide has been nothing short of fantastic,” he shared. “Thank you for welcoming me and my family into your lives and making us feel like part of your own. I look forward to cheering on the Blue Jays alongside all of you, and you’ll always hold a special place in my heart.”
Martinez’s broadcasting career began in 1982 when he covered the All-Star Game and postseason for the Telemedia Radio Network. After six seasons as a catcher in Toronto, he transitioned to television in 1987 as a Blue Jays color commentator. His broadcasting resume also includes stints with ESPN, XM Radio, TBS, and MLB International before joining Sportsnet in 2010. For the past decade, he’s been the trusted analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Dan Shulman, a partnership that dates back to their earlier days with TSN.
“From our first day working together in 1995 to Game 7 of the World Series, Buck has been the ultimate broadcast partner,” Shulman said. “No one worked harder, no one cared more. He’s a cornerstone of Blue Jays history and a cherished friend to everyone at Sportsnet.”
Martinez’s contributions to Canadian baseball were recognized with the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame’s Jack Graney Award, honoring his significant impact as a media figure. Beyond broadcasting, he managed the Blue Jays in 2001 and part of the 2002 season, compiling a 100-115 record. He also led Team USA in the inaugural 2006 World Baseball Classic, where they faced Canada, managed by his former Blue Jays teammate Ernie Whitt, in an 8-6 upset.
